A tailgate-down kayak setup adds support. It does not answer every overhang rule.

What the open tailgate changes

For physical planning, measure the support surface with the tailgate in the actual position you will use. Add that support to the usable bed length, then subtract the total from the kayak's end-to-end length to estimate unsupported cargo length.

This helps compare a bed-only setup with a rear-support or rack setup. It does not establish the legal projection unless the governing rule uses that same support edge as its reference point.

What the open tailgate does not settle

The tailgate position does not by itself answer marker, lamp, maximum projection, wheelbase, last-axle or overall-length questions. It also does not confirm that the tailgate, cables, bed, hitch, anchor points or chosen equipment can handle the load.

• Confirm the vehicle manufacturer's limits and instructions.
• Confirm the kayak manufacturer's transport and support guidance.
• Use rated tie-down equipment and suitable anchor points.
• Keep lights, plate and required vehicle equipment visible and compliant.

Recheck before a nighttime return trip

A daylight departure can become an after-dark return. Run the calculator for the actual time of travel and carry only equipment that matches the official rule and the physical setup. A daytime flag should not be treated as a substitute for nighttime lamps or reflectors where those are required.
